Packofbastards: Actually there are more than two reasons for it, (attention or release.)

I believe for some it is for attention. And yes for others it is a release. But then there are those who do it because the only person they can hurt physically in their moment of complete rage or sadness and get away with it is, themselves.

It’s a coping mechanism for some who feel overwhelmed and are unable to cope with an emotion. And then there are people who are suffering from depersonalization or a lack of feelings and do it to feel ‘alive.’

I hate stupid generalizations like these that are hidden under the guise of another generalization, then backed up with some scientific fact, making the general population think “Oh well, it must be true.”

When in actual fact, this does more harm than good. It gives the impression that there are only two reasons in the entire world that a person would cut themselves. Humans are much more complex than that, give us some credit.. Geez.
